Bambi
In April last year a little dog took the Shelter by storm. Her name was Bambi and she was no ordinary dog. She arrived at the Animal Shelter at just 4 months of age with two broken hind legs. How she had injured herself or who had injured her will always remain a mystery but it was immediately apparent that although Bambi was broken on the outside, she was something extraordinary on the inside.
Bambi received three life saving surgeries through donations to the Faith Fund. After the first surgery to repair the broken limbs she returned to the Shelter with strict veterinary instructions to keep her calm and immobilized. Mission Impossible!! Little Bambi had no intention of staying in one place or for that matter behaving herself at all. There were so many wonderful places to explore and so many people to meet and greet. She especially enjoyed garbage cans and found them to be full of all sorts of exciting things to play with and consume.
Bambi underwent two more surgeries to remove the wires and pins that had held her legs in place as they healed. One would expect that such grievous injuries would have dimmed the spirit of this little girl, but quite the contrary. It was as if her mission in life was to keep her caregivers on their toes and busy chasing after her.
Bambi spent much of her recovery time in the front offices of the Regina Humane Society where her puppy behaviour both amused and frustrated everyone who came to know her. It was not uncommon for staff to leave the office for a few moments only to return and find her balancing atop the desk. It’s a wonder that she did not break a few more bones in the process of her recovery.
It was obvious that despite her love for all people, Bambi would need a special family who could keep up with her and work with her to help her become a well mannered member of their household.
She is a girl with spirit –a dog who loves to have fun and she now shares her life with a wonderful family who thoroughly enjoy her exuberant personality. To look at Bambi now, one would never realize that she had endured so much.
